[:en]On December 12th, I conducted an onstage conversation with Cartier Japan CEO Veronica Prat Van Thiel at the Roppongi Hills Club in Tokyo co-hosted by the American and French chambers of commerce in Japan. We had a full house, and lots of great questions from the audience.<\/p>\n

This was an off-the-record event. Below are my personal takeaways.<\/p>\n

  1. You don\u2019t need 100% buy-in<\/a> from superiors or staff to move forward on a bold initiative and succeed. You can\u2019t please everyone, and that does not matter. It is inaction that makes everyone lose.<\/li>\n
  2. Always take actions with high upside gain and low downside risk. When you win, you win big. When it doesn\u2019t work, it\u2019s no big loss. Do this regularly, and overall you will do extremely well.<\/li>\n
  3. Any company can achieve gender parity in management roles. Never compromise standards to hit a target. Only hire and promote the best. Make your company a great place to work for both women and men. If someone declines when offered promotion, whether a man or women, don\u2019t just take \u2018no\u2019 for answer. Find out the root concern. Usually it is something that is addressable.<\/li>\n
  4. Innovation<\/a> is ninety-percent audacity. Unexpected success is one of primary origins of innovation, and can only happen when audaciously trying something new.<\/li>\n
  5. There is no such thing as the retail apocalypse. Digital is never enough. Customers just want good service with through a digital or physical channel, and good service also includes a human touch!<\/li>\n
  6. No amount of big data, AI, or automation can compensate for a lousy shopping experience. However, constantly ensuring the best experience for a customer can compensate, even when your digital technology is not quite where you want it to be.<\/li>\n
  7. Luxury products are not just for women. Half of buyers are men.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nInnovation is ninety-percent audacity. <\/a><\/span>Share on X<\/a><\/span>\n
