Which one do you hire?<\/p>\n
His answer came without hesitation: the one who never failed.<\/p>\n
To him, it was obvious.<\/p>\n
He was wrong.<\/p>\n
Here’s what that answer actually measured. Not talent. Not judgment. Fear.<\/p>\n
A candidate who has never failed has never been tested. He’s avoided risk long enough to keep a clean record. The other one has been in the room when things went wrong, and stayed in the room long enough to fix them.<\/p>\n
Show me someone who never fails, and I’ll show you someone who never learns.<\/p>\n
I said exactly that to seventeen CEOs at a roundtable I hosted last week at the Peninsula Tokyo. The talk was called Dauntless Leadership, and the room didn’t just nod along.<\/p>\n
They argued. About whether boldness even survives contact with Japanese corporate culture. About whether “outlier” leaders prove anything to everyone else. About a question with no good answer: is the process you inherited actually wrong, or is it just not yours yet?<\/p>\n
The bottleneck was never the right framework.<\/p>\n
It was leaders who already had everything they needed, and chose to wait anyway.<\/p>\n
